Selamat membaca...Always "caring and sharing"

Buses for the disabled

http://thestar.com.my/metro/story.asp?file=/2009/2/16/north/3276029&sec=North

Congratulation to Rapid Penang company for their aim to increase the number of Rapid Penang buses for Jun (added 200 buses). It's not the number i'm impressed of but their intention in social welfare by providing the new buses with the facilities for persons with disabilities. The new buses will be disabled-friendly.

How will it disabled-friendly?

The new buses will be fitted with a ramp each to enable wheelchair-bound passengers to board the bus. In addition, the Rapid Penang had also installed the Global Positioning System (GPS) on all its buses to monitor their (OKU) movements.

So, let us wait until Jun and see how is the accessibility provided. Is it match with the persons with disability need or it just only the implementation.

Let us wait until its time...jeng..jeng..jeng.

Findings on access for persons with disabilities at Pacific Komtar

Hi everyone…we meet again. Here I would like to share with you our new findings on the access for persons with disabilities. Our target place for this time is Komtar building.

Here it is the place we go to do our survey

On 1st February 2009, we do our survey at Komtar and try to find out either there are access for persons with disabilities. Luckily we met with the security which are working at “Pacific” shopping complex at Komtar. We introduce ourselves and told him the purpose we are taking pictures at that building and Thanks God, he willing to help us. He explain to us the access that are provided to persons with disabilities in that building. In addition, he also recommended us to see the manager so that we can get more information about it.

This is the ramp at the entrance of “Pacific”

This is the ramp usually used by the persons with disabilities especially for individual that are using a wheel chair. Take a look at this picture. Do you think that it is applicable for them? Isn’t it is difficult to use this ramp. Or is this really a ramp for persons with disabilities or it is just for unload thing? If this is really a path for disabilities, why is it doesn’t has a handrails on both sides. This is very dangerous for them.

There are 3 lift were provided at “Pacific” shopping complex

Next, we go and see the lift that are provided here. Here, lift are the only facilities provided for disabilities to move from one level to another. Can you see what is the problem there? The flowers is located near to the call button and it bring difficult for those who are using wheel chair. Supposedly, there should be no obstruction below or next to the lift call button.

Space inside the lift

The number of a button inside the lift

Ok, next let us see how is inside the lift. I think the space is enough if the person using wheel chair come in to the lift. The problem is with the button for the number. I think it is quite high to reach the button for number 5 if sitting on wheelchair. Other than that, the number should be embossed or use Braille number so that it is easy for the blind.

Toilet for persons with disabilities

Furthermore, we check how is the toilet. For your information, there are a toilet provided for persons with disabilities at every level of this complex. The toilet is located between the ladies and gent toilet. Here is the picture of the toilet that are provided there.

View inside the toilet
That’s all for now. I hope can hear any comment , opinion or suggestion from you all about the facilities provided for persons with disabilities at this shopping complex. Thank you for spend some time reading our blog. Until we meet again for the next findings. See you…

Access For Persons With Disabilities at Prangin Mall Shopping Complex,Georgetown,Penang

This is the paths which is outside the mall. This paths are very useful for persons with disabilities if they wish to do shopping at Prangin Mall. The condition of the available paths is not easy to use,I guess. This is because the paths also not providing the handrails along the paths. It is difficult for person with disabilities to walk along the paths. The ramp or landing area also not provide at the centre of the paths. It is important to provide the ramp so that person with disabilities can rest for a while before they continue to move. I think that the surface of the paths is a bit slippery.

The first three picture above are the lifts which is situated at the back mall while the other pictures are the lifts which is situated inside the mall. The lift at the back mall has a big space while the lift inside the mall has a small space. The lift inside the mall which has a small space can only accommodating by one wheelchair and only 3 or 4 people can enter to the lift. They have to compete with the other person to use the lift and also have a problem to press the lift button because the button is too high. Both of lifts are look not very friendly. This is because the condition of the lifts are not providing the handrails especially the lift at the back mall. I think that the lift is suitable for the shop owner to loading their equipments or goods and also use by the workers to bring the garbages to the downstairs. Thera are also pieces of rubbish spreads and the liquids sticky on the lift's floor and cause a smell inside the lift. It is look not comfortable and dirty for persons with disabilities. Is it fair that if persons with disabilities use the lifts which is dirty, less accessibility and not comfortable? We, as a normal person also don't want to use that kind of uncomfortable accessibility, am I right?

The toilet? Hmm..I think that it is not suitable for persons with disabilities. The reason is the condition in the toilet is looks ordinary or not showing that is the accessibility for person with disabilities. There are no handrail on the wall that persons with disabilities use to move or transfer to the toilet. The toilet roll dispenser and the sink also not provided in the toilet. That accessibility only provide outside the toilet. I think that they need to use the sink and they have to compete with the other persons in the toilet. Sometimes, the toilet are full with people. It is difficult to them, right? =)

This paths like the escalator and the ladder are not suitable for persons with disabilities. These paths also are not safety for persons with disabilities because the condition of the escalator is moving faster and the ladder is too steepest or sometimes the ladder's surface is slippery. It is dangerous and difficult for them to move and they need a long time to walking inside the mall. But i think that persons with disabilities never use this kind of path and I hope so. If you guys see any persons with disabilities try to use this kind of path, please help and show them the suitable path for use.... =)
